Actually the British Empire didn't really disband until after World War II (when the British didn't have the money to keep it going) though it was running down even before then.

The Soviet Union did behave similarly to an Empire and some people have tried calling the US an Empire (it did have an Empire a while ago but it certainly doesn't now).

I can only hope that someday the US does have an empire. Just imagine the benefit to mankind if every nation were a copy of the US. If our constitution were to be the governing document of all people. After all if not the US than just which country should be the model for the world? Iran?

Maybe you should take a reading comprehension course. That list shows the year that the empires had their largest land mass not when they were disbanded. So umm your point is no good.
Just click at the bottom of your page on list of empires to see how there have been empires in the close past.

Read 'em and weep -
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man reveals a game that, according to John Perkins, is "as old as Empire" but has taken on new and terrifying dimensions in an era of globalization. And Perkins should know. For many years he worked for an international consulting firm where his main job was to convince LDCs (less developed countries) around the world to accept multibillion-dollar loans for infrastructure projects and to see to it that most of this money ended up at Halliburton, Bechtel, Brown and Root, and other United States engineering and construction companies

Well, two things. First, the French, British, Italians, and Germans would be very surprised to learn the last empire ended in 1922--since they still had extensive colonial holdings until well after World War 2. Next time, don't take wikipedia's word for it.

Second, "imperialism" refers to policies aimed at establishing/extending an empire, not jsut to having one. And the invasion and takeover of Iraq by the Busdh administration obviously qualifies.

Nor is that the only example. China continues to rule Tibet and the Israelis continue to move settlers (colonists) into the West Bank.

Wikipedia is an online-contributors encyclopedia and is not known for its accuracy...and of course the US is an Empire...how do you think it got hawaii? or even Puerto Rico? (Hawaii was taken over after the monarchy was deposed and annexed unilaterally 5 years later, Puerto Rico was made a Protectorate but has refused statehood). Jjst because the US is a republic, does not mean it is not an Empire...complete with overseas territories. Rome was a republic, too, when it was expanding, wasn't it? Just because Georege Washington refused the title of King, does not make the US any less imperialistic...and what would YOU call the Monroe Doctrine?

For the ones that think America is an 'empire'---

Didn't read your own link, did you? Under the heading "Largest Empires" check out number three and number ten specifically.
The former Soviet Union was considered an empire and number ten is the "American Empire" That's us like it or not.

Because it didn't end in 1922. Please go back and read your source again. There is a list of empires and if you click on each, you'll see that they don't end in 1922.

Huh? We didn't become one of the largest empires out of thin air. How long have we maintained this status?
