You should definitely talk to your counselor, mostly because something is seriously wrong if your family issues are so disruptive that they are keeping you from school. If you end up getting a GED, you can go to college, but you will probably have to start out at a community college for two years, since very few four-year colleges will take the GED directly as a substitute for high school. If you graduate from college, employers will definitely look at your performance in college, not high school.

Start out by talking to your counselor. My understanding is that you have to drop out of school to be eligible to take the GED. If you've been a decent student you can probably pass the exam right now. I know people who passed it after 9th grade. You're going to need to explain to employers and admisssions reps why the problems that are keeping you from getting to high school won't keep you from getting to work or college classes. Since many jobs you qualify for right now and most college class schedules are more flexible than high school, that really shouldn't be hard. Just think about it ahead of time so that you're prepared. You can start college by taking classes at a community college or taking a few classes without being officially accepted. Once you've successfully completed some college classes, having a GED will not be as important. Having a GED is a much smaller problem than not having it or your high school diploma, so if this is what you need to do you should go ahead and do it so that you can get on with your life. Good luck!

You can always attend college, you just need to see your options. For your situation, probably the best option for you is to attend a JC then transfer. JC's accept almost anyone as long as they have a diploma or GED. If you complete your degree in college, that's what they'll be looking at when you apply for a job. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.
