Because thinking is a part of being alive.. As heart beat is to the heart so thinking is to the brain. So people say that you can reach a state of non-thought through meditation but it is hard to prove scientifically whether the mind/brain can reach such states. It's believed that we are thinking either consciously or unconsciously most of the times. Even dreaming is a form of thinking. It is only in a state of deep sleep that we do not think.

because it is the inanimate not the inane that do it, and the why's and the wherefore's are totally irrelevant in the big scheme of things.
