Pastor Mike Huckabee (a Southern Baptist) is currently leading in the polls among Republican candidates.

Considering that he is a fundamentalist Christian pastor, is he suitable to be our president? Can non-Christians and even Christians of mainline and liberal denominations (as well as "restorationist" denominations such as Mormonism or Jehovah's Witnesses which are frequently called "cults" in fundamentalist churches) trust Huckabee not to violate their freedom of religion?

Putting aside the questions as to whether or not Huckabee can win and whether or not he has sound policy proposals, does the fact that he is a fundamentalist Christian pastor make him unfit to be president?

No, but the unsuitability is not limited to one particular human or career path.

(Jeremiah 10:23) I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.

Well, heres another way of thinking about it, would you consider an atheist that professed his beliefs to others to be fit for President? Essentially that is all Huckabee has done, he speaks out loud to others, what he believes, instead of hiding it like many politicians do... If you'd vote for an atheist that tried to spread his belief, then you'd have to give Huckabee the same benefit of the doubt. I'm not sure that I am going to be voting for him, but I believe that he deserves a fair shake, being a pastor should not eliminate him from consideration.

No one should be disqualified for the office of the presidency based on religious beliefs. That sort of litmus test exists in Iran. We don't want to go there.

Judging from the questions/answers in YAnswers, many Americans are like sheep...stubborn, resistant to change, and gullible. Who is better to lead than a pastor (latin word for shepherd)

I am a Christian. As such I follow the Bible, and because of this remain neutral in political matters. I put my faith in God, not a presidential candidate.

Whether my following the Bible is supported or not, won't stop me from doing it.
