Yes, the name Shannon is unisex. It is derived from a Gaelic expression meaning 'old one'. The name is also a surname... Typically, surnames are unisex. For instance: Avery, Brody, Ashley, Addison, Quinn, Bailey and Riley are all surnames, and are thus are used as first names of both males and females. The reason that some people may think that Shannon is only a female name is that the name has become much more popular for females than males in recent years. For instance, in 2007 Shannon (female) was ranked 436th in popularity, while the name Shannon for males fell off the top 1000 names in 2007 (the year previously, the name Shannon for males was ranked at 982 in popularity). I've known both male and female Shannon's. In Australia the name Shannon has been cemented as a male name because of the Australian Idol singer Shannon Noel, at least among the younger generation (I'm in High School). The male Shannon's I've known don't cop any teasing about their names, but my little brother, who has a relatively masculine sounding unisex name (Brody), does. My mother has a distinctly male name, but she doesn't cop as much sh!t about her name as my little brother does. It's not really fair that unisex names are seen as more acceptable for females; or that it is more acceptable (by society's standards) for a female to have a traditionally male name, but not for a male to have a traditionally female name.

I'm a shannon and I'm female, but get this, I grew up in a small rural town in Central Oregon and believe it or not there was 3 of us Shannon's in my neighborhood. I was the only female one, the other two were both male, Shannon Sr. and Shannon Jr. (and that was 51 years ago). It's a good uni-sex Irish name.

I've known a boy Shannon and a girl Shannon. I think Shannon is fine for a male middle name, but don't like it is much for a first name. Simply because Shannon is more often (in my opinion) associated with girls than boys. Though you may like the name, giving a boy such a feminine name could lead to a lot of being teased when he enters school. However, it is your choice, just remember to keep in mind how others will react to the name throughout your son's life.

The name is Irish, and can be for boys or girls. If you are living in the USA, it is more commonly given to girls, but can be boys also. Shannon Doherty (female) is pretty well known, so that pushes the name more towards being a girls' name.

Boys can get teased if their name seems too much like a girl's name. That is unfair and sexist, but it is reality. Some boys would be fine with it, because they have a strong personality and no one would tease them. Other boys will be teased for something no matter what their name is.

For a girl it would be fine. Girls rarely get teased for having a masculine seeming name.

Shannon can be either. The girls I know named that are spelling it Shannan. My husbands brother who died a few years back was named Shannon and we are naming our son after him. Taylor Shannon. But it can be either. Personally I also have a MALE cousin named Shannon and our neighbor's name is Shannon (Male also). I only know one girl named Shannan and all those males named Shannon.

Technically, it can be-- one of the guys in the rock band 30 Seconds to Mars is named Shannon-- but I've never personally known a male Shannon, only girls. I would really, really advise against naming a boy Shannon.
