Why are churches against it? What's the big fuss over this new movie?

Protestors believe that the movie is sacreligious in the way that the characters supposedly want to kill God. That is pretty much cutting the argument to the quick.

Also some of the caracters have spirit creatures they use, which are called dæmons

*A dæmon is a manifestation of the soul of a conscious person in the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials. In those universes with physical dæmons, they exist external to the human in the form of animals representative of the person's personality, although children's dæmons may change form at whim. The bond between dæmon and human is intimate, and dæmons must remain within a small distance of each other; contact between a person and another person's daemon is taboo, although dæmons may touch each other. Many characteristics of a dæmon match the concepts from other cultures or psychology.

I personally think it's ignorant for people to slate and protest over a movie such as this(Also Harry Potter). I mean, if there can be religious movies why not athiest movies? Shouldn't people be allowed to make there own choices?

apparently they dumbed down the themes so that christians would not be upset and would take their children to see the movie. it is written by a professed atheist. It is one of the books in a trilogy where at the end two children kill God so that they are able to go on living as they please. I believe the children are named adam and eve in the books. So that is what all the fuss is about. But the movie does not carry the themes as strongly it is meant to be more subtle to hook children and get them to buy the books. The author said that he wanted to get rid of God in the minds of children. Pullum's( the author) books are a series compiled to be called his dark materials. And he himself says that his books are about killing God and that he is suprised he has not gotten more flak. People are upset about it because it disguises itself as any other childrens movie, yet its goal is to spread atheist beliefs, as are the three books written by pullum. this is the first book in the series. Pullman also says he hates what Chronicles of Narnia represent. this is sort of the anti chronicles of narnia. The character of the "authority" in the movie was not portrayed as he is in the book. In the book he is the God figure. Supposedly the next two movies will carry the anti religious themes more heavily, but the director felt the movie should be introduced in a lighter fashion to get people to watch it. The little girl in the book series find out that God isn't real. so I guess that would be what the author is trying to portray to young children

The author of the book is an atheist. The three books are "screaming" of it's objection of religion. Of course, they cannot show that on the big screen so they made it look "very mild".
l did not read the books but have watched the movie. lt's not as good as l expected. Very disappointed actually.
