About 2-10 years.
By about the 5th year you'll feel "out-of-date" and want to get a new one just for the hell of it. Thats what my parents did.

wow 10 years is a long time. I still have to see one last that long. well maybe it would last that long specially if you do not use it as often and maybe it is off quite often.
most computers are built for obsolescence. the replacement cycle of PC's, Processors, Softwares allow the computer industry to live and be vibrant. Imagin if the cycle is ten years. Intel and Microsoft would need to look for new products.
In any case the average is 3 to 5 years, beyond 5 years is a bonus. Prepare to replace you computers after the 5th year, not only due to aging parts, but because there are no more parts to replace it. Your software would also need to be changed. New applications would need new software, and most of the programs you run are on old disk or nowhere to be found. If it is on floppy's or magnetic material, the magnetic layer would have lowered the 1's and 0's on the material making it hard to read or unreadable.

As far as how long they will last, some of the very first computers are still running today.
Persoanal lifespan of a computer is as long as it does what you need it to do. Could be 1 year and it could be 10 years, everyone has a different need, and want for speed.

desktops only last as long as the hardware they are made with. a better question is how long with my computer be practical for use. when a computer "dies" usually only one component of the computer is actually damaged, usually the hard drive due to its moving parts not found on any other device in a computer. by the time it fails however the cost to replace the component is usually dirt cheap. my 2003 laptop hard drive crashed a few months ago and i got a better brand new one for only $35.00 on ebay.

Depends on what you use it for and how good it was when you bought it. If you use it for a specific business application to run a specific program, it could run for decades. A basic home PC lasts around four to six years depending on the level of multimedia/gaming use you get out of it. Gaming pushes the hardware industry in the computer world.

The first computer I ever saw was at Control Data in Bloomington Minn. My Brother worked there and showed us 1 room of banks upon banks of mammoth machines Reel to reel with no mobo just zillions of wires. And that one room was just one part of the computer.....the whole building was one computer.....Awesome as hell!!! That was 1970.

I have some computers that are more than 25 years old.
They are obsolete by todays standards.
But they still work like new.
