Mine is a recent memory. Seven years ago I was still working managing a coffee/donut shop. Physically it was much more than just a coffee shop we did thousands each night in wholesale orders delivered to large corporation cafeterias. I had my fibro in remission for the first and only time. I was testifying in a stressful assault trial that went on for quite awhile. I had a lot of pressure from family to not testify.
In all this this I had gained a fishing and boating buddy since the last May.
My birthday is a week before Christmas and is usually overlooked because all that is going on with the holidays.
For my birthday that year my buddy gave me diamond earrings. Now I had been a poor working class Mom for so many years these were a real extravagance.
A week later for Christmas I received from him a book bag, since I was going back to college along with my 18 yr. old daughter.
I cried at the encouragment this guy was giving me. In side the back pack was a solitaire diamond pendant...and a set of rings.
That day for the first time in my life I was drowning in gifts. A vacuum cleaner, gift certificates, snow globes and collector plates all with the year. My hero has continued the tradition of plates, ornaments and sno globes each year since.
My two daughters cried with happiness right along with me. It is true we do reap what we sow. I am living a wonderful harvest.

One of my favorite was in about 1987 when husband was home on leave from Korea. Had just finished fixing the mashed potatoes and pulled the turkey out of the oven, when the power went off.
One of our notorias Ice Storms hit. We had no electricity for 3-5 days but when I look back on those days, we had a lot of fun.
Our 4 children were 5th-8th grade or thereabouts.
We sat at the dining room table, wrapped in warm clothing and comforters, played all kinds of games by day and by candlelight at night.
The children were happy to have their Dad and I was happy we were all together as a family-and of course that my husband was home because- we hadn't seen him in 6 months.
My husband and I had been through worse hardships than this. In Korea, we slept on the floor and it was really cold there.
We had no vehicle there or in Germany and we had been without things others take for granted.
We usually seemed to make the best of what we had. Probably because we both grew up poor.
Our children are married with their own kids and they still talk about that Christmas.
We ran out of candles so I sent my husband to the store for more.
Some of the ones he came home with were decorative ones, that I knew would not burn long.
Each child picked one as their own and every year we set those candles out as decorations, even today. They are shaped like toy soldiers holding gifts.

The one Christmas that I can remember is (I don't remember how old I was) but when I woke up on Christmas morning and ran downstairs to look under our other Christmas tree I saw some stuffed animals that I adore to this day. They are: a penguin named Perry, a sheepdog named Archie, a cat named Noel and a sheepdog named Nick. I love them with all my heart and take them out every Christmas and remember the first time that I laid eyes on them under my tree. They were a gift from Santa...now most people may think it was my mom and dad that bought it for me...but I don't believe that...I still believe in Santa to this day even though I'm 30 years old.

When my sis was 12 and I was 13 we had planned this trip to see my 2 sisters and their families that lived 120 miles away. We so looked forward to seeing them since we were all very close!!! Daddy got better tires for the car (always had bald), borrowed money to make the trip and had the car gassed up, mama had food prepared and presents bought and we were ready to go! The next morning we woke up to a white Christmas! I had just bought the 45 record "Rhythm of the Rain" by Nino Tempo and April Stevens and it played non-stop as we looked out the window with hopes that it was going to clear off. Mom and Dad pondered trying to make it for the longest time! "Finally dad said let's go!!" We made it and the roads were very bad!! When we pulled in the drive-way at my sisters' they were crying out of amazement that we made it safely!!! That was the best Christmas ever and god was with us every mile!!!

Oh yes. my wife and i were married in 1946 and we bought a house in the country. Payments were 21.00 a mo. We didn't have much money. Didn't even have a car. Hitch hiked wherever i went. We only had the two of us at the time. I went out and cut a tree, and put it up. Didn't have lights, so i had some automobile wiring around and i bared the wire at intervals and soldered tail light bulbs on it. Then we dipped them in some old house paint and let them dry. We put them om the tree along with some paper circles we made and hooked a car battery up to them. We couldn't leave them on long, cuz they would burn the paint. Then we bought each other two presents. Come Christmas morning, we opened our presents, I opened mine and it eas a pair of socks. She opened one of hers and she found the same thing. I opened up my second present and found a pair of gloves. She opened hers and found a pair of gloves also. We laughed and laughed over that. Never forgot it. BEST Christmas EVER. Glad to share it.

My very best Christmas I was I think 10 years old. My brother had gone away to college in Wyoming, we lived in Ohio. It was going to be the first Christmas our entire family was not together because we couldn't afford to fly him home. He was married and his wife's family flew them home as a surprise so I woke up and there he was. I thought I was dreaming. It was the best one ever. I was the youngest of 5 so this was very sad for me and to see him was the greatest present I ever had to this day.
