Buy a screw extractor set at your home store. Not expensive and easy to use.

First off, if the screw is worn off then it is probably stuck. IF you simply put a new groove in it it is likely to break inside.

Use a penetrating oil like PB Blaster.

Tap it lightly with the hammer and screwdriver

Use an "easy-out" (reverse drill bit) that you can get at a hardware store that may or may not have people dressed in orange aprons or try the make a groove trick mentioned by others

you ought to purchase a screwdriver designed to get rid of worn bypass slot screws. in case you're accessible try a dot punch close to the periphery of the screw and gently yet firmly punch the screw head anti clockwise. Make a solid punch mark with the punch vertical first then lean the punch in course mandatory.

They sell a device on TV that drills a small hole in the top of the screw then they flip the end over and there is a funny shaped screw like end that catches the lip of the hole and it will come out of there. I think it is sold by the Oxyclean man.

File a new groove into the screw so that you can take a flat head screwdriver to screw it out.

Try pliers or vise grips(locking) if head of screw is exposed. If it snaps, drill out the remaing screw and replace with a better screw (phillips(star), robertson(square)) for easy future use.

Use a dremel tool (or some other rotary tool) to make a new groove. Or if it is too small use a marking awl to create a new groove. Also make sure the screwdriver you are using has sharp clean edges.

Drill a small hole in the top and use a retractor bit to take it out. Get one at Ace, or Home Depot.
