No i don't think so, but i suppose it depends on other things, like your economic status, your community and your relationships to others in that community. We ave a few friend who might be described as cold and distant but we make sure to include them and more often than not they find their niche also...it just takes time.
We are hardly a cold and distant community out our way here in Northern California on the Russian River.
But I must ask, if you aren't really cold and distant what are you?
And is fitting in important to you?
Be yourself as best you can ,and unless you are a complete creep, you'll find a place where you can dwell with others...
And what is the American lifestyle anyway? Which one are you referring to?

There may be small pockets in the U.S.A. where the people appear cold and distant but I haven't found them and I've been pretty much every where. But then like people tend to gravitate towards each other where ever they go. Happy people find happy people, strange people find strange people. You get back from society what you put out.

Also, don't judge the people in the U.S. by what you're finding at Yahoo Q&A. It seems to be a place that collects more extremes than main-stream personalities.

Am not going to have a go at Americans, but over here we all just get together and have a good old chinwag over some beers at a bbq, any differences get sorted out in a good game of pool or poker....... But have noticed that there are too many people here that are on a real downer, so much negativity, tut tut.

The American culture is too diverse to be generalized so broadly but you would definitely fit into the Swedish culture, without a doubt.

I think you need to get out and meet more Americans. Your experience is obviously very limited.

When I answered your question before I told you that in the US, like anywhere, being warm, charming, and gregarious will get you far.
