It is called a TV set because when they first started making them that is how it came. Originaly, back in the 1940s, it wasn't a single unit. What you bought was a set of components. One component was the receiver. One component was the speaker. One component was the picture tube. Each of these was a seperate peice that you set up and plugged together with wires running between them for the complete set to function.
