I think we carry it throughout life. How it affects us is determined by how we have responded to the experience(s). It is different for different people....and just because a person says it doesn't bother them does not mean that is true.

An interesting question, will be looking back at the answers.
Some carry the baggage and dull the memories with alcohol and drugs-eventually committing suicide, or destroying themselves, physically and emotionally(as well as everyone they love).
A few live in relationships and allow others to treat them badly rather than be alone and carry the baggage with them.
If more people would get into counseling and seek help, there would be greater chances of the baggage getting stowed in storage.
None of us get over the childhood baggage.
It is always in back lurking, (life events bring the memories out strong) but we can get to the point where it doesn't interfere, and we try to live normal, whatever normal is.....

What ever happend in your childhood years, you will never get over it, not even 100%. The way you were raised is the person you are today...

I think it depends a lot on the baggage.

If one is sexually abused, I think that would stay with them forever.

I believe about anything else can be thrown over the bridge and you can go on with your life without blaming other people for your problems.

Yes. You have to be smart though.

EDIT: I think sexual abuse is a different story. That is probably a lot harder to overcome.
