we just bought a 2007 Jeep liberty with 24,000 kms on it. We have had it for about 3 weeks now and just recently we noticed that there was a leak in the oil pan. its not really seriouse but it is going to be repaired. We have bought the extended warranty on the used vehicle so we went to the dealer and they said that it must have been a rock hit it and we would have to pay for it as it was not covered by warranty. We DID NOT do annnny sort of off-roading with it, the only thing we used it for since has been highway driving. They said they looked it over but we do not see any way at all that we could have caused this problem. none the less we still have to pay for it which is about 200 bucks.

any thoughts about if this should be covered, is there anything we can do ??

Hockey-

I'm going to have to go with the Ford Man in his answer on this one. I work in a Parts Department for Chevrolet.

Here is how the Warranties work so you have a better explination.

Whether its a maufacturer warranty or an aftermarket warranty, these warranties only cover materials and workmanship defects or damage caused from these defects. People assume that when they get a new car with a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty that its going to cover abuse and road hazard issues too. Well not true.

Damage that happens from road hazards, (damage occuring while on the road), will not be covered. This is the same with abuse of the vehicle then claiming a warranty issue.

Lack of maintence and general neglect also disqualifies vehicles for warranty repairs.

In your case though, it sounds like the pan may have been damaged when you purchsed the vehicle, and if a large enough rock got kicked up, possibly could have finished the job that was already started.

But I can tell you from experience. Oil Pans are made from some pretty heavy gauge steel, and it takes quite a bit of pounding before they can be punctured. This is also probably the reason the Dealership is taking the position on this issue.

To see what I am talking about, you might just head out to a wrecking yard, and have a good look at a few oil pans to see how heavy and tough they really are. I think you are going to be suprised.

But my guess is that the Oil Pan may have already been damaged when you bought the vehicle, and whatever happened was a result of that damage from the previous owner.

I hope that helps you out. Good Luck!

Take the Jeep to another dealer and have them take a look at it. If they say the same thing, and they won't cover it under warranty, then look in the owners manual and get the 1-800 number for customer service and call them. They should be able to help you out. Explain the circumstances and give them all the details. It would make good sense to cover the repair for good will, if nothing else.

good luck.

You could possibly contact the company.. is it a "certified" vehicle? Here in the US Chevrolet has a certified program for used cars, (Chevy or not).. and really it states that the vehicle is checked out. Basically you can talk to a district service rep... but what it comes down to is only do business w/ a reputable dealership and establish a relationship w/ service mgr BEFORE u drive off the lot w/ a new purchase. If the service mgr doesn't impress u or u don't like the dealerships' reputation... DON'T buy a car there no matter how good it looks!

Rocks wouldn't do that, because I have a 05 jeep liberty and I go to the mud, woods and rocks everywhere never had any pronlem like that. you can try to push the dealer fix it for you because the warranty covers it, tell them you never go off road such such, they might let you off, if not ask for the manager talk to him or her see what happen then stard from there.
