It's very effective. A minority of citizens in a country are educated enough to question everything their leaders say. Most will go along with it willingly, trustfully, and obediently.
Here's my example.
"Naturally the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same in every country."
-Hermann Goering, Reich Marshall of Adolf Hitler, at the Nuremberg Trials
"Either you're with us, or you're with the terrorists."
-President George W. Bush

Propaganda is very effective. The best example I can think of is, basically, any Michael Moore film. "Bowling for Columbine", "Fahrenheit 9/11", and "Sicko" were all very effective propaganda tools that he used to try and advance his own liberal beliefs and ideas. Do you remember the fallout from Fah 9/11 before the election of 2004? It did not change the end result, but many people believe that many, many voters fell into the whole "Bush bashing" trench dug by Moore. And look at "Sicko". Have you seen it? His film has brought the issue of government provided healthcare to the forefront of this election. All of the democrats are spouting how we are moving toward it and they have plans to put it into action.
The problem with Moore's propaganda (or anyone's for that matter) is that it is always biased. You never get the full story. I could go on and on all day about this. Basically, he is a master at propaganda, even if I don't agree with him on any of the issues.

Very effective. During the second world war before HItler targeted the Jews he went after the mentally retarded. He had a bunch of films taken of the mentally handicapped and asked the viewer if they would want to live like that. And a majority of these people said no. It was a documentary on the history channel.

It's very effective, it can sway opinion. Such as Walmart doing community advertising about using local products when it's been shown that when they open up a Walmart it usually drives local businesses out of business.
