The reason the nitrate salts were used for preparing solution is that most nitrates are soluble in water. You can check your solubility tables in your textbook and see that the nitrate salt of just about any cation is soluble.

If you recall your general solubility rules, remember that nitrates (NO3-) are generally soluble. By using the nitrate salt, the compound is almost certainly soluble, regardless of the cation involved.
