I had a terrible accident with a semi-truck in 1995 on a bridge. I did not get hurt, however, 6 years later I started to freak out when I drove on the freeway. Eventually it led to anxiety and panic attacks. Now, almost 7 years later I am still not driving on the freeway. I have tried and tried but just can't.

i would most certainly NOT laugh at you for that. i have a close friend that is 28, only drove briefly for a bit in high school, had no bad experiences or accidents, but is totally scared to drive. doesn't have a license because she'd rather NOT drive because of the many accidents and problems that come with being on a crowded road with other people.

i would think that a therapist would be someone you could talk to about this who could help with the anxiety. if your goal is to return to driving on the freeway again - i have heard that hypnotism can be very helpful. do the research, find someone who is recommended, bring a friend/loved one with you to meet the person first and check it out. it may be a good option for moving beyond the fear.

there are some good books (workbooks, too) for phobias and anxiety/panic attacks.

I work with quite a few of our caregivers that travel all over to peoples homes and my first question when giving directions is "do you drive the expressways?" This is more common than you think it is! My own mom did not drive on the expressway for the 1st 10 years she was driving. She finally started to try it with me. I would drive one car and she would follow me in another. We would drive either late at night or in the early afternoon when there wasn't much traffic and only go for a few miles and then get off. If she got panicky she would flash her lights at me and we would get off at the next exit.
She does drive them now, but only to certain destinations that she is very familiar with.
No, I would not laugh at you! There is always another way to get where you want to be, it just takes a little longer. Do not beat yourself up over this! Take the longer way and enjoy the scenery, the people you see, the stores you find that you wouldn't have if you were on the expressway. Everyone has a fear or 7! Yours is one you can work around. No worries!

No because since i moved out here to Las Vegas, i stay clear of the Freeway. People out here, don't know how to drive. So the Freeway is the last place your find me driving.I know a number of people that wouldn't, use the Freeway.
So your not alone.

I wouldn't, I can't drive on the freeway either. I wasn't in an accident though, I just worry way too much. I get on the freeway and all I see in my head is mangled metal and bodies.

That's understandable. I'm glad that you weren't hurt. I had a similar accident in '89. I was hit by a semi., and spent two years in the hospital with a broken back and neck. I had to learn to walk all over again etc... Try to work through it a little at a time. Good luck!

No I would not laugh, I think it would be quite traumatic, I know a lot of people who say they break out in a sweat driving on freeways, theres no reason to put your self through it to prove a point.

Depends on where you live... :)
No, there are a lot of horrible freeways out there and I wish more people had the guts to say they weren't comfortable driving somewhere than to do it anyway and cause a mess. Sometimes the back roads are faster anyway since they don't have the traffic.

NO i would never laugh at you because i refuse to drive let alone on the freeway. If it makes you nervous then don't do it, there is nothing funny about fearing driving on the interstate.
