Some of the USA's best... where are you from?
Columbia Univ.
New York Univ.
(a ton of graduate schools, law schools)
Downstate Medical Center
Pratt Univ.
Long Island Univ.
Wagner Univ.
St. Johns Univ.
St. Francis college
CUNY schools and community colleges across all 5 boros.. from Hunter college to Kingsboro community...
It depends on what you want to study, if you make certain schools, and of course your finances... you can live in, around most any of these... and find decent apartments with yourself and a share, near any of them (even NYU)... especially being, the subway and buses are very easy and low cost... to get to/from anywhere. A car is another issue... and you'd want to stay with the Staten Island or Queens colleges or campuses (St. Johns has campuses in both).
And of course, there's univ. and colleges about 1 hour outside in all directions.. as well, from Hofstra, CW Post to Seton Hall and Rutgers in NJ... look into it.

There are a ton of universities in NYC, but you need to know that it's very expensive to live there.
i don't think you should be trying to live there and going to a school, if you can't hang you will have just wasted money on a university that you didn't get anything out of.
If you are serious you must plan for that. You may want to ensure you have enough money to support yourself, before committing to it.
Check out NYC universities, and see what you will have to do and how much the costs are to attend, then decide if you will live on campus or off, a 1 bedroom apt will cost you at least $1500 a month...

it style of feels to be risk-free, except you visit Columbia, the place your odds of having a Nobel Prize, elected President, or triumphing a Pulitzer go up in comparison to different colleges. yet whilst those do not frighten you too lots, then attempt to get admitted.

Yes, including NYU. Please keep in mind that new york city is quite an expensive place to live.
For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ
For career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and search 'teachers,' for example.
