there are so many but you can't support them all, at our local club there is like ten raffles a day, and if you say no you get a dirty look and made to feel mean

Yes, I definitely get tired of it. To me, giving to charity is a wonderful thing, but not something that someone should feel obligated to do, especially when there are so many! I have some money to spare, but not enough to give to every one that approaches me.

Sticks and stones may break my bones - - - - but the Bank Manager bounces my checks when I get too generous. What I have done most recently is : when I am asked to "donate" or buy raffle tickets, or sponsor some charity or other - I just tell them that I make all of my donations in January of each year (which I really do) and if they would like to get on my list, then they had better send me a note in time for distribution! I don't get nearly so many requests any more! It works - it really does! CJ

I regularly donate both time and money; but I'm very selective about which group I donate to. Ten years ago I stopped donating to any group that does phone solicitations. I flat out refuse to donate, and tell the caller "I no longer contribute to any group that cold calls me at home". I did this because I do find the multitude of calls annoying, and also because I prefer to donate to groups I'm very familiar with. I don't mind the once-a-year mailings I get from three of the groups I donate to, they don't bombard me with mail and I have an ongoing committment to these groups. I also don't feel guilty when I decline to buy raffles, etc, because I know how much I contribute and would bet that it's more than the folks buying the raffle tickets....:)

I am very tired of being solicited for donations everywhere I go. Every weekend, some group is standing on all four corners of the streets around the courthouse. It's "buy donuts, support the theater, give to the Shriners, here's a poppy, help the softball team...give...give...give." When I go to the grocery store, Walmart, or the gas station, there are dogs for sale, bake sales, bell-ringers, ARC , all with their hands out.
I don't have unlimited money. I WILL give to those people whom I wish to support. But when I'm solicited, I tend to close my wallet a bit tighter.

Seriously.....I am on the verge with this. I scraped by barely making it and there was no one there for me. The absolute second I was able to give....I did. Immediately gave. Vetrans, War vetrans, Disabled vetrans, Heart, diabetes, arthritis, blind, you name it......I gave. At first I got address labels, a sticker......now I get calls 24/7 and mail reminders as if it's a bill I owe!!! Have you forgotten? Now instead of 5, 10 or 15 bucks....it's choose 100, 500, 1000. I used to cringe from bill collectors.....now I cringe at the donation experts. Pressure me like that and you get NOTHING.

We give to our local Food Bank, many times through the year and also Thanksgiving and Christmas and also the Women's Shelter.

When I get calls, I merely say that we donate locally to a place of choice.

They usually accept that and hang up.

Yes, I am on a very limited income. I donate to the Salvation Army and St. Jude's Hospital. There are thousands of worthwhile charities, but no one can support them all.

I do, only because the ones I support have passed my name around to other charities. I already chose who I want to support, because as you have stated, you can't support all of them. It really makes a lot of work for me trying to throw most of the unsolicited charities mailings in the trash. I give what I can give to my selected few.

And then there are the things that come in the mail that you don`t ask for that expect you to send money like address labels and christmas cards. Too much for me to buy them all and half the time the address is wrong and I can`t use them.

YES, and I get even more tired of all the politicians and churches and charities who send me e-mails and snail-mails with their perfectly printed forms on how to donate money to their "cause", whether by check or credit card. My dad warned me I'd get them one day. I have for decades now. I don't think I ever thanked my dad for that before he died in '05. I hope you hear me now, Dad. God Bless you.
