Surprise them with something they didn't expect for example...

I get them something that's not on the list but reflects their hobbies and interests. It is generally something they've made a comment about at some time during the year.
Believe it or not, in our immediate family, honesty is very important. Family members get more upset over a lie than dislike of a present. I guess we raised them a little different.

If you know what they like and can surprise them at the same time that's even better, but I try to give people something they want so that they really use it.

hmm. my family usually just tells me what to get them. or when we are out together and they mention something i'll write it down and go back and buy it. some will be surprised because i have no clue what they want. so, i would say it's probably going to be a mix.

Ha ha - My boyfriend & I are playfully bickering about that one. For Xmas my family has always given each other a "wish list" of ideas. But for example, if I saw something I thought my sister would like I might get that for her even though it's not on her wish list. But my boyfriend hands me a list. I joke & say it's his order -- "would you like that super-sized" & we laugh. Some differences but we will compromise our way thru it.
=)

depends on who it is...some people are real open about surprises and then again you got others that you'd soon tell you exactly what they want cuz they are soooo picky and fussy... :)

.I usually surprise them by giving them what they really want: they are not used to someone careful to their unexpressed 'wishes'
