I really want to do a study for a college course that involves wearing a traditional muslum burkah and going about my daily life in my small upstate NY town. I would monitor how differently I was treated, etc. How do you think the results would be?

Not sure but some I would think some people may be biased toward what you are wearing and what you are signifying by wearing it (i am not saying this is right). I would think you would have some interesting results for sure.

From my knowledge, you would probably be treated terribly compared to the wonderful rights woman share in the US. Muslim woman are treated far worse that in a free world, they must cover up so that no other muslim man may commit sexual lust. I read a news article the other day on how a muslim woman was raped by 7 men and although the men went to jail, the woman did too as well as 90 lashes. You probably would appriciate your freedom more after you get your results

And after i read your question once more, my answer made no sense and wasn't very relevant to your question. My bad and just listen to the other answers

Sister im on that same page...You really shouldnt pay that much attention too it...I have a bunch of friends that go to colleges and universities in NY and they are mahjaba you know, and they play it cool and they dont face any problems with no body. Let ppl see you the way you are and convince them that stereotyping isn't the correct window to view ppl in. And btw im talking from a 18 year old perspective. Tc and gluck

I think by Western Standards, you might feel like a second class citizen, I've heard form some Muslim friends that by Muslim standards, you'd feel like a queen. I guess perspective is shaped by your environment. Live and let live.

it would be a good social experiment. i would say that you'd be given more looks than if you weren't wearing the burkah.

i think most people wold be a little freaked out, especially if you just did it with out telling them why you are doing it. if they are some what educated about the Muslim religion and not the crazy mad bomber Muslim religion i think you will find people to be tolerant of what you are doing. maybe even a little curious to find out more about the Muslim culture.

Do you mean Muslim? Well, people might oddly look at you for the veil you will have covering you. And they might see you as a immigrant.
