I am auditioning for my school musical, Les Miserables. My voice part is mezzo-soprano belter. I would like to choose a lesser-known song that shows off my higher range.I am not exactly sure which specific part in the show I want to try for, but can anyone suggest a female audition song that fits the character of the show?? thanks.

As a mezzo-soprano belter, you'd most likely want to audition first for Eponine, then Fantine.

For songs, I'd suggest:

As Long As He Needs Me - Oliver
I Know The Truth - Aida (may be too overdone)
I Want To Be Bad - Good News
If He Walked Into My Life - Mame
If I Can't Have You - Saturday Night Fever
If You Really Knew Me - They're Playing Our Song
Look at That Face - Roar of the Greasepaint
Losing My Mind - Follies
Someone Like You - Jekyll and Hyde
There Are Worse Things I Could Do - Grease (?)
What Did I Have That I Don't Have? - On A Clear Day You Can See Forever
What I Did For Love - A Chous Line

Most if not all of these convey characters thinking about love lost or longed for which is more towards Eponine. To know more about each character or to find a link to overdone songs and other resources click here http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/shows/lesmis.html

good luck,

Check out "Heaven Help My Heart" or "I Know Him So Well" from the musical Chess. They will showcase your mezzo-soprano voice and both songs have dramatic depth which works well for a Les Miserables audition as those songs aren't merely sung in the show but presented as their words. You want to be able to show you can act within your song as much as you can sing.

Do NOT sing On My Own. You should NEVER sing something from the show you are auditioning for. Not only will everyone do it, but it also shows a lack of professionalism and it will be hard for them to cast you in another part if you do not get the one that sings that song. Do something by the same composer's like Movie in My Mind from Miss Saigon.

I think Cosette was a soprano - try Eponine instead. Her song 'On My Own' from Les Mis is one of the best known from that play. You can download it or probably watch it on youtube.

Have a look at this page link. You might want to first see if it fits into the category of "overdone songs". Here you'll be directed to places to find songs as well as other things that can help you as a singer.

There are two very nice female solos in Les Miserables "On My Own and "I Dreamed a Dream" Both sad but they give a lot of opportunity for vocal expression. A mezzo-soprano could handle either and both songs call for a voice that can "belt". :+)

If I were auditioning, I would like the part of Fantine whose devotion to her daughter and love for a worthless man forces her in to a life she she would not have chosen otherwise. She is the one who sings "I Dreamed a Dream". The song reflects what she has lost in life and how her dreams have forsaken her.

The lyrics

[Fantine is left alone, unemployed and destitute]

[FANTINE]
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.
