I'm in a situation a lot like this. I got offered by my neighbor who has played football since he could officially start playing. He wants me to join a Semi Pro league in the State (Montana...the team is called the Gallatin Valley Snow Demons) and I have never played an organized game of football in my life. He even wants me to try for the Quarterback position. Though he wants me to try Fullback first. I am the same height and I weigh 235 pounds..yea..you know the short stocky build. Doesn't sound like a Quarterback type player does it?...Well apparently by him and some of the players on the team I throw a lot better than anyone they've seen play for them. But the thing is is that I am going for it...it will be fun as hell...I bet if you made the team you'd earn A LOT of respect and not be given any crap from then on by the other players and it wouldn't matter if you had a superstar game. Go for it and try your hardest.

I'm 19, i'll be 20 in july. I had never even THROWN a football before the beginning of this year...
I joined a flag football team, where i was a quarterback. we finished second out of 8 teams. Think about it... i had never EVER played, and i started playing after i graduated highschool.. and i'm doing really good. All you need is a general level of fitness and motivation.
Buy some books on football plays on all the rules, and study up... and go join a team. Just practice and have fun.

In my opinion, high school is the time to try different clubs, sports, etc.
I mean honestly, if you don't try playing now, you probably won't ever get a chance to play. I am a collegiate runner, and I am fortunate to be able to continue my running career upon graduation by competing in road races. But, football's different, for most people after high school, they will never get a chance to play a serious game of tackle football again.
Go for it! You can gain more friends, become more fit, and have a sense of accomplishment knowing that you tried it, AND maybe even find out you are REALLY good at it and be able to compete in college and beyond.

It is never too late to start playing football.
But if you're talking about doing it for a living, you pretty much need to get going in high school to ever have a chance. Even then it is a one in a million shot. There are guys in the pros that never picked up a ball before getting into high school, but once that option is gone, the chances of success are slimmer than they already are.

No worries my friend started playing football when we was 16 years old and now he can tackle like crazy. So pick a position your really like then train that position and go out next year. All you need is practice and muscles(depends on what position you try out for) Good Luck.

you aren't too old at all...
there are many pros that didn't even start playing until college, so go for it! start training (weights) now that way you get a jump start on the season. once the season gets nearer, work on your endurance/cardio. my son is 16 and has been playing since he was 8, but there are lots of kids who start playing in 9th or 10th grade.
Good luck!!!
