A coffee shop is best. It's public, it's safe, and you can order anything from a coffee to bottled water. Starbucks is the most common (and to me, too generic), so try and find a funky or really interesting local coffee shop with great coffee.
First dates are about first impressions and easing into each other's tastes and unique qualities.
A dinner and a movie is filled with possible problems that can be found out by the simple coffee shop route first. You don't want to go to a movie, because you may not have the same tastes in films at all; let that get sorted out later when you are more comfortable. Going to a restaurant can have its drawbacks, because you may not feel comfortable ordering your favorite foods and eating your own way in front of someone new.
Ice-skating, bowling, miniature golf are all cute and ease tension, but you will not have much time or quietude to really talk uninterrupted; they are very good ideas for later. Going for a hike in the wilderness is a big no-no with someone new.
Carry your cellphone and ask a friend to call you about 20 minutes into the date as a safety valve. If the date isn't going well, you can say you have to take care of business. If you don't wnat to do that, you can always politely say this is nice, but you've got other obligations.
The important thing, really, is being comfortable with yourself (dress appropriately and be nice and clean) so you can focus on the conversation and body language of your date. And this lets your date know that he or she can be comfortable too. Smile when appropriate, try not to be to intense, and be sure to say your dates name now and then.
And keep the receipt or a little souvenir, such as a coaster or flyer to remember your first date if all goes well. Have fun!

I usually fall back on the dinner and a movie routine. However I sometimes do the boardwalk midway in the summer or coffee for lunch.

It depends on the age range you're in, but I'd say for anyone over 21(?) - a nice, but not over-the-top restaurant. Olive Garden is a respectable choice.
If you're younger, movies are a safe bet.

Do a safe lunch, so if things don't go well, you can end it and be on your way...if it goes well, invite him or her to help you pick out a gift for your mom, dad, sibling, friend's birthday..its a nice way to spend some casual time working on a little fun project together.

The bowling alley is always a good choice, everybody looks silly and it makes you relax.

i like bowling dates. It gives me a really good idea of how they handle themselves. How competitive they are. If they're a good or bad loser...etc. Not to mention its normally alot of fun
