Whatever you do, dont upgrade your psp if you want to get custom firmware.
Custom firmware is a fake firmware that lets you change firmware to a newer or older version , o and the best part is that it let's you run free games yeayyyy i hacked my psp and its so freakin sweet.Brick basically means broken but in hackers language , so if you brike your psp your doomed.

Firmware is software that is put into permanent memory chips and installed the machine - the stuff that must be there to start when power is first turned on. Most computers have small firmware and load most of the details into RAM or temporary memory while most game consoles have a lot of firmware because it can run faster and makes the machines unique.
A brick is the power supply. Called that because it looks like and weighs like a brick - usually black with a cord to the wall and a cord to the machine, it sits out of the way on the floor, a shelf, or the back of the desk. It puts out low voltage power and having it separate moves the heat away from the console and makes it lighter.

your pals psp's stopped working reason they did no longer have a pandora battery and there psp's have been given bricked. (stopped working) custom firmware wont cut back to rubble your psp while you're making a pandora battery (google it or youtube) its in reality a report on you place on your psp into the psp's equipment. its very secure with a pandora battery and plenty extra helpful then some regullar boring psp. lol

brick is when you try and mod your psp and the firm ware conflicts with the unite causing it to turn into a"brick" it wont turn on or work. in you r case you would need to go to psp-hacks.com there is a couple of files you will need to mod a psp slim and some apps for the slim i know that they say you need a "pandoras battary" which is the only thing that will allow you to mod your psp. "3.60 M33 Custom Firmware (for PSP Slim)"
