I am working on a project that I am doing with a partner, and she claims to have a song by Jazz and Blues legend, Duke Ellington, called Route 66, but I can't find it, or information on it, anywhere...

Words and music by Bobby Troup, published in 1946 and recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio the same year, this very popular song has been covered by dozens of artists, jazz, blues, and rock. I'm not sure if Duke Ellington ever recorded it, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised since nearly everyon else did. The TV show didn't show up until 1960 and the producers had Nelson Riddle compose a different theme because they didn't want to pay royalties to use the original hit.

Lyrics:
If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way,
Take the highway that is best --
Get your kicks on Route 66.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
More than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route 66.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66.
Come on in -- get your kicks on Route 66.
Get your kicks on Route 66.

I'm not aware of an Ellington recording of Route 66, and I checked on allmusic.com and it had no listing for him having recorded that song.

It's considered a jazz standard, so hundreds of people have performed and recorded it; as was already stated, Nat King Cole's version is probably one of the most well-known. It's not unthinkable that Ellington could have performed it at some point, I just can't find any evidence that he recorded it.

If I am not mistaken it is his band that has done the song "Route 66" I do not think that when he was alive he did the song. I would check on -line his(Duke Ellington) music Bio that may clear up the confusion. Good Luck and "Play it Kool Baby"

Oh gee... I can't remember who wrote Route 66 but I know for certain it was not Duke Ellington. I heard the whole store once, and the two guys who wrote it were being interviewed, but I don't remember who they were... they did go on to write other music, however.

The great arranger Nelson Riddle wroye the music, and Bobby Troup wrote the lyrics (1966) It was a theme from the TV show of the same name. I don't know if Ellington's band recorded it or not.

As far as I remember it was Nat King Cole who made it famous. Got the record right here and I remember the air play.
