I'm afraid that "alan b" is giving you incorrect information.

Increasing the resolution of a low resolution image will only result in the creation of bigger pixels.

For example, if you have an image of 150 dpi, and increase it to 300 dpi, all it will do is make four identical pixels out of one. It will increase the file size without any MORE improvement in image quality than, simply, increasing the size of the picture's dimensions.

The only way to make a poster size image without big pixels would be to start with a high resolution image.

you can also create your poster in a vector based program like illustrator. There are no pixels in illustrator. It can be blown up the size of a building or reduced to a matchbook without distortion.
