The noise could be anything and without a good description of it, the sound will be almost impossible to diagnose over the internet.
As for making it last longer, just make sure you do your oil change every 3,000 miles. You need to do a transmission fluid change every 4,000 miles. You will need your timing belt changed every 40k miles. You will need a tune up every 80,000 miles (spark plugs/wires, distributor cap/rotor, water pump/thermostat)
If you do all of those things everything else will need to be replaced when it goes out. But the most important things are things that can cause more problems, ex: if your timing belt breaks you will need a head job to replace bent/broken valves.
Hope everything helps!

The neat thing about bwm's like yours are that they are easy to work on yourself.. But a Haynes manual or the original Robert Bentley manual (there is a web-site) And read it from cover to cover 3-4 times, until it all sinks in. The more you know, the better. Remove your valve cover and look for signs of varnish and sludgy debris. You can remove the lubrication tubes and clean them. On some models, you need to do a valve adjustment. This takes a little time, but is fun to do.. Most things a determined owner can do him/herself with a little confidence. Typically, the worst thing that happens is that if the engine isn't burning fuel efficiently, or you use cheap gas, the exhaust system will deteriorate. Noises under the hood can be a bad tensioning roller or a water pump with noisy bearings. Use only German coolant to protect aluminum and plastic colling system parts!!!! Shampoo the engine compartment to keep it show-room floor clean and drive it proudly!

Take it to the BMW dealer and spring for a check-up, will save you money in the long run, I'm not saying to let them do the work necessarily, but if you're planning to keep it for awhile, they are the best qualified to check it out. Good luck, I hope it's something simple and easy to fix. Ask them if they can printout a maintenance schedule for you. You can't change the oil and filter too often.

The dealers at BMW are best suited for handling what is wrong with your car, but it costs money just for them to look at it. The diagnostic isn't free at the dealership and I don't think it is worth taking it to the dealership since it'll probably cost more just to physically check everything than what you actually purchased the car for. Just do regular oil changes, tune-ups and probably best to get it checked out by someone else who will offer you the best, affordable service.

Your chum is an fool. His ideas are basically that, and encompass gross generalizations not based in statistical diagnosis. Maxima is a great vehicle yet in not an identical league as a Lincoln, i be responsive to for a certainty the Maxima does not holiday as candy as a Lincoln. i think of he's jealous of you and that Lincoln. i be responsive to which one your persons will prefer to holiday in and that is not particularly a familiar eastern vehicle. Lincolns, like your self, coach extreme type continuously.

BMW..Make sure you have a good job for the $5000 transmission and $2100 converter.
Maintenance and repairs obscenely expensive for only status in some people's minds.
