DJ Premier is my favorite producer and Guru is in my top 5 MC's of all time. My rating of them as a collective, well I'll leave you to do the math.
Gang Starr are hip hop icons who endured successfully in this game for 15 years (89-03), not to mention the success both have had individually in their careers. I believe one of their LP's garnered 5 mics, although I know it wasn't their best work -Hard to Earn which was deserved of such recognition. Their last release The Ownerz (2003), while decent, definitely was not on par with their prior work. To those who are only familiar with that CD should go back and listen to No More Mr. Nice Guy(89), Step in the Arena(91), Daily Operation(92), Hard to Earn(94) and Moment of Truth(98). I also have a 2 CD set called Full Clip: A Decade of Gangstarr which still gets regular play. I think that came out in 1999 or 2000.
Best songs:
1. Mass Appeal
2. DWYCK
3. You Know my Steez
4. Who's Gonna Take the Weight?
5. Speak Ya Clout (w/Jeru the Damaja & Lil Dap from Group Home)

Gang Starr is definately one of my favorite rap groups. I have most their albums, lately been listening to alot of "hard to earn". Favorite songs are Mass appeal, The planet, Code of the streets, Step in the arena, alongwaytogo, no shame in my game, and take two and pass. I don't really dislike anything they've released. If anyone tells me rap sucks, i'm always happy to lend them a gang starr cd to prove em wrong.

Gang Starr I think had one prominent defining moment in Hip-Hop history: they introduced the world to Premo.
His samples conbined with his scratching for the chorus made some of the greatest beats in Hip-Hop history.
I would consider Gang Starr the most influential group in Hip-Hop history, bar none. Run-Dmc did great things, but Premo elevated the production game.

One of the best that ever done it. Guru has lyrics with meaning and even my non-rap girlfriends could understand what he was saying compared to other hiphop artist. LOL. The early years were classic, with one of my many favs being "Just to get a rep" "Words I Manifest" and "Mass Appeal". Then later with "Right where U stand"... Cant forget Dj Premiere on the wheelz of steel... under-rated cats in the whole hip-hop movement. They most def get my vote in nomination to HipHop Hall of Fame. Thanks for the reminder of a group that has faded from the limelight. Think I'll check out their myspace and wiki.
*edit* how could i forget "take it personal"!!! for those who "never heard of them" or clueless to say "commercialized rap"...check em out... Best Of GangStarr Instores 12/26! I'm coppin' dat!
