My husband and I are taking a trip to Miami in January. My question is , do we need to rent a car while in Miami? We plan on staying in a hotel in South Beach (Marriot, Ritz, or Loew's).

South Beach itself is walkable, but if you want to do anything outside of South Beach, you definitely need a car. Why don't you split it up, like spend a few days without a car, then get one for a couple of days to explore? Parking in Miami Beach can be difficult and/or expensive, so ask your hotel what's the deal with parking.

A car in the MIA. Na. Everything you need is right in South Beach. 1 you got the beach, 2 the restaurants, 3 the clubs. Maybe if you were staying for a long period of time. But I would say na. Ive been a tourist in Miami 5 times. Once I had a car when I drove there from Orlando and it was annoying. Parking was hard to find or expensive($20) and this was 4 years ago.

If you want to see all the things there are to see and not take 2 hours to travel 20 miles by bus than yes you need to rent a car. But of course Traffic is bad, parking is hard to find in Downtown area during the day and Miami Beach at night but its alot better than taking Miami horrible public transit system.

If you are staying in SoBe a car is worse than useless. If you want to go exploring or say to Everglades Nat. Park, Sawgrass Mills, the Keys, Ft. Ldle, then you'll need a car. Suggest you just rent one for the days you'll need it. Bear in mind, January is top of the season & rental availability may be spotty in SoBe. Stay flexible & be prepared to travel a distance to get a car. The Concierge can help.

I'd recommend it, i live in south Florida, just south of Miami, there are a lot of things to go and see, but you'll go broke paying a taxi, like the everglades with alligators, the Florida keys for fishing and diving, etc.....
