If they would put that Cummins in the Ford truck, they'd have something. The Cummins is the better engine, and the Ford is the better truck. I'll never have another Dodge as long as I live. Had a '95 2500 with the Cummins, and sold it with only 68,000 miles on it. I was more than happy to get rid of it. Of course, the Cummins engine was the only thing about the truck that didn't give trouble. I liked chelle's post. My groundskeeper has a late-model (2006 or so) "Powersmoke", and he's having those exact problems. He said he'll be sitting at a stoplight, and the thing will cut off for no apparent reason, as if he had turned the key off. I agree they should have left the powerstroke as a 7.3. I think they screwed up when they changed it. To each his own. Personally, I'd love to have another old 7.3 non-electronic-controlled oldie like my 1989 F250 I had years ago. Sorely miss it. At least you didn't have to have a college degree to work on it!

Dodge uses an engine made by The Cummins Engine Company which is one of the best diesel engines in the world.
Ford Motor Company, this minute makes their own V8 diesel. It's called a Powerstroke Diesel.
General Motors and Isuzu of Japan has a joint venture for the production of the 6.6 liter diesel engines made in Dayton, Ohio. These engines are called a Duramax Diesel.
GM has just announced today they they will be producing an all new 4.5 V8 turbo diesel for the 1/2 ton pickup market in 2010. The motors will be produced in the Tonawanda, NY engine plant near Niagara Falls. The new 32 valve DOHC motor will have an excess of 310 hp. with 520 lb-ft of torque. It will have a compacted graphite iron block and aluminum cylinder heads, intigrated manifold and common-rail fuel system. It's sized so that it will fit where any present small block V8 gasoline engine is now placed.
Presently, Duramax has more horsepower @ 330 and 620 Lb-Ft of torque.
The stronger GM motor gets better fuel economy than does the Ford or Cummins.
Over the past 10 yrs Ford has switched suppliers and designs many times. Ford now makes a 360 Hp diesel for their F-450 trucks.

there are so many pros of getting a diesel truck over a gasser. i have a 96 ram 2500 5.9l v8 and it just sucks gas. even if i keep a light foot on gas i get 11 mpg city, hwy probably 14. the engine is really under powered even tho i have a swapped 2001 engine that has 250 hp and 345 lbs/ft torque. my father has a 2002 dodge ram 3500 with a high output cummins 24 valve diesel with a 6 spd standard 245hp 440torque. the 2001 ur looking at is a standard output thats why its a 5 speed with 235hp and around 430 toruqe i think. driving my fathers truck changed my perspective of diesels. the truck had so much power compared to my truck and its only a 6 cylinder. the truck gets over 20 miles a gallon on the hwy. dont worry about diesel being more expensive than gas because the diesel gets liek 30 to 40 percent better milage thhan a comparable gasser. unlike a gasser u can put a chip in the truck and easily get over 60 hp increase and over 130torque increase. the standards are bulletproof and will last you a very long time unlike the automatics which are pieces of garbage that keep dying on you. living in canada british columbia, a 2001 diesel is over 20 grand and a gasser is like 12 grand. my father just sold his 2002 3500 for 24 grand the other day with 115,000 miles. it sold in like 3 days after being in the paper for sale. probably in the us this truck is easily worth way more than 8800. if i found a diesel for 8800 id buy it in a second if the truck looked pretty nice.

the cummins is more powerful but it is really by opinon i have been brought around diesels all my life my father owned a trucking company and the cummins seemed to be more reliable and hold up under pressure better and the fuel efficient part is about the same it all depends on if u upgrade the computers or not and the exhaust the cummins in the dodge is just a mini version of the cummins in the 18 wheelers .

hands down the cummins is the better engine, better reputation and power. the ford powerstroke 6.0 L motors have hundreds of issues right now and i cannot stress enough how poor of a design it is. the biggest piece of advice i can give you is not to buy a dodge truck if you are going to be working with it.. bottom line is they are unreliable and cost too much to fix, there isn't a new dodge truck on the road that doesn't need a track bar, or even the newest ones with a steering rack leak and an axle seal leak.. they are poor quality cheap trucks... the fords on the other hand are simply a more reliable truck, especially with the 5.4 L triton in it.
but don't get me wrong, i'm not a ford fan at all.. i just work on these vechicles all the time and from my experience, even if i was a millionaire and could afford to fix it, i wouldn't buy the dodge.

Cummins is more powerful
powerstroke is a v8, cummins an inline 6
cummins is more fuel efficeint
cummins can last 300,000 miles or more
Overall Cummins is the best diesel for small duty trucks, it also beats the duramax (sadly)
