If you are looking for warm water to swim, January is not a great time. The weather is iffy and water is brisk.
Try one of the islands further south if that is an issue.
The bahamas should still be warm enough for shorts and sunbathing mid day, but the water is cool and you'll need a sweater at nite.
Of the main islands in the bahamas, Freeport is colder, since it's further north than nassau. or you might try the exumas or san salvador or even long island.
Try tripadvisor for some better information.

You really need to research the different islands and see what activities you would like to do.
Are you looking for a real Bahama experience... Go to Long Island or Harbour Island. They are very friendly islands, and you really do get to meet the people. There's not a lot to do, but the rum is cheap and the fod is good.
For a city tour.. look at New Providence, Nassau/ Paradise Island the largest city in the bahamas, there is 2 casinos if you like gambling, and some very upscale hotels.
Grand Bahama is nice, its casual, there is a casino and the pace of the island is laid back and friendly.
On the islands I have been too, the waters are all very beautiful, Grand Harbour has pink sand beaches.. And was just really quaint. I would love to go back and spend some time,, as when I was there it was right before tourist season opened. The really cool part was they drove golf carts around for transportation.
So it really is a mater of what you want to do.. how much you want to spend and if eing in seclusion will drive you crazy or would you find it relaxing.
Whereever you choose, You will find it beautiful and have lots of memories to enjoy.

Nassau is a great place to stay in Jan. There is plenty to do downtown - Atlantis isn't too far away and it's cheap. Look into hotels/resorts along the water there. But be careful to stay on the beach near your hotel, you don't want to go wandering around the area outside the hotel - it can be unsafe.
But Nassau and the Bahamas are beautiful and I would go back in a heartbeat!! :)

Atlantis is not cheap - check out their website! If you wanted to have the facilities of Atlantis but not pay quite so much, check out Comfort Suites nearby.
Sounds like you need more-general info. Go to the library and check out some books about the Bahamas [Fodor's and Frommer's are good]. F & F both have online info, too.
Also, go to TripAdvisor.com, check out their destination guides, forums and hotel/resort recommendations. CaribbeanOnline.com also has a lot of info. [The Bahamas is not in the Caribbean, but....]
