Summary:
The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him--except the town's most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children.

Courage can come in many different forms and sizes. In Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage was shown by two different people, Jem and Mrs. Dubose. Jem had courage by ignoring Mrs. Dubose taunts for such a long time with no retaliation. Jem also had courage by coming over to Mrs. Dubose house and facing up to what he did wrong. Mrs. Dubose also had some courage by letting Jem in her house. She has to be strong to let someone inside her house, who cut up and destroyed her front lawn. She also showed courage by shouting at Jem and not fearing retaliation. Courage comes in different forms, and even I had to show it once. I remember when I had first learned how to body board from my father. I was very young, around seven years old, and I was extremely afraid of the ocean. The crashing waves and riptide made me fear for my life in the water. My father tried to teach me how to body board and I was scared that I would drown.
