OK - Dixie 58 . . . obviously one of the millions of 'brainwashed, proud to be an American', patriots . . . of course one must feel 'pride' in this country's military!!!! It's what we, of the 'sheep' classes, are raised and trained to feel . . .and when a family loses one of it's members, following the pied pipers of this wondermous democracy? How can they then say it was the 'wrong' decision? Hmmmmm
Our freedoms on this continent are not 'earned or protected' due to the thousands who have been led to life and limb sacrifice, by the empty promises of glory and compensation, proffered by the leaders of this buttinsky land that we call America. . . Wake up - people - We are allowing ourselves to be led, drugged and asleep - to certain destruction... but, keep taking your mood elevators, and anti-depressants . . . they say that the pharmaceuticals work, eventually! To what end? Seems we are seeing that, in the answers, like what you offer!
Edit -
sorry to get off the track -
you asked
Why show respect?
Because . . .
that is the conditioned, programmed, acceptable, behavior.... doesn't make what the troops are doing good or right.... you are just supposed to respond, in a robot like way!
It's the 'AMERICAN' way!!!! Conform, you dolt . . .

In some ways, I agree with you. Showing respect to someone just because of the uniform they wear is sort of ludicrous. However, many of these people joined with the knowledge that they would have to serve somewhere and they might have to put their lives on the line. In that regard, they do deserve our respect because apparently, you aren't willing to do so. True, there are those that are downright jack-As, but that doesn't mean they are all that way. My neighbor is currently serving in Iraq right now and he joined after we invaded Iraq. I think he knew that he would eventually get called up, but that didn't mean he wanted to go. Being in the military is a job with more strings attached. Do it or go to jail. They don't have a choice but to go where they are told.
That said, the military has many advantages to it. They offer pensions and advancement opportunities (if you have a degree in something). Not even most companies offer that anymore.
I don't agree with the war, but as long as we are there, we might as well show a little respect for those who are putting their lives on the line, even if it's not right here at home. Yes, the US is a big bully, but I realized a long time ago that there's not a dang thing I can to do to change it because they will never elect me president and I don't want to inherit Bush's problems.

Well, I respect them as much as I respect anybody else.
Yes, some of them truly believe in serving their country and protecting us, and I respect that. Some of them are decent people who joined up because they thought it would be a cool thing to do. And some of them are just people who couldn't get jobs working at Wal-Mart or the local fast food restaurant, and didn't have the diligence to go to school.

The bottom line is that if these guys weren't in the military doing all the dirty work for the dirty politicians, you wouldn't be sitting there typing right now. The country would be overtaken by others. A country without a strong military has starvation, civil war and gets attacked by other countries (consider most of the African countries). Nobody messes with countries with a strong military (think of the US, China and many other countries). Somebody has to do the dirty work. It's sad when those who sacrifice their lives to do it get no respect on top of it while those disrespecting them are benefiting from all the fruits of their labour.
Edit to respond to your additional comment:
You say you can understand if we were to get attacked, but it doesn't make sense to you to go fight unnecessarily. The thing is, if we don't fight BEFORE we get attacked, then it'll be too late. Why wait for our buildings, bridges and homes to explode before we make a move? Also, if we go to war in order to secure natural resources such as oil - it may seem unfair to kill people and go to war in order to get it, but if we don't do it, then somebody else will get the oil, and imagine what our economy and life would be like without being able to get gas at the pump. Yeah, war is ugly, the reasons why we have to have them are ugly, but without it, we wouldn't enjoy what we enjoy. It sucks, but that's how life has been for humans from the very beginning and until we figure out an alternative way to live (most people can't even live in peace with as few people as their family so imagine how difficult is to get along with billions of other people around the world), we should have the greatest respect for those willing to do the most dangerous job in this country, sacrificing their lives for it. If other countries take all the oil and nobody wants to sell it to us so we get weak, and we can't drive to work and our economy goes down the toilet, then we'll be invaded and taken over overnight. It's like someone with high cholesterol and poor diet and no exercise not doing anything about it until they have a life threatening heart attack which may kill them and it'll be too late to do anything. It's hard to see the goals for the average person but trust me, the government wouldn't be speding so much money on an unpopular war that is costing the president his popularity if it wasn't necessary. Also what they do makes other nations/terrorists think twice before messing with the US.

Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel if you are legally obligated to serve a certain term and for doing what you are ordered to do, a person comes up and yells at you or treats you poorly. How would you feel?
I don't know if you are old enough to remember The Viet Nam war, but what you are describing is the treatment that the VietNam vets endured. It was not fair to them. War is horrible, and our soldiers deserve better than how your post implies they should be treated.

I am glad you are NOT in the military. The very fact that you have the right to come on this webpage and post your opinion is proof that we live in the land of the free.. a freedom given to us by people with guns buddy, protecting us from these bozos that think we are the devil. Why don't you just play your Play Station and watch some extreme sports.

The military members not only die for their country, but they also give up many personal freedoms so that masses can have theirs. When some attacks another persons freedom, they also attack our veterans and insult their sacrifice.

i am guessing you are 12 years old and do not understand the many freedoms you take for granted were earned by our military in times of war around the world. If you cannot respect our country and the brave men and women who choose to serve our country by being in our military, then go move to Iraq or Afghanistan or any third world country such as Darfur, then maybe you would appreciate those who answer the call to duty wherever it might lead at such great sacrifice to themselves and those who love them! GOD and country! You are a spoiled ,selfish, ungrateful fool to insult the men and women who are heroes!!! Look around!!! all you enjoy and take for granted was because of our heroes in the military and the grace of GOD!!!
