I agree that there's a problem with the question, and I would not word it this way. But in fact Madison DID play a major role in "writing the Constitution", from his drafting the original framework ("Virginia Plan") on which the whole discussion was based. He also played a significant role in the COMPROMISES.

As for the precise WORDING of the final document -- this was drafted by the

Committee of Style and Arrangement
(Proposed and appointed September 8, to revise the style and arrangement of the Constitution)

Members of that committee:
* Alexander Hamilton
* William Johnson
* Rufus King
* James Madison
* Gouverneur Morris
http://www.usconstitution.net/constcmte.html

Thus he had a hand in this part of the writing. Yet of these men the one who had the most influence on the actual wording -- who often trimmed cumbersome elaborate drafts into simpler, more direct and more elegant statements-- as well as on key parts of the structure was the last listed -- was Gouverneur Morris (of Pennsylvania). He is, in particular, given credit for writing the Preamble on his own.

For more on this man, see the link below and the book by Richard Brookhiser , Gentleman Revolutionary: Gouverneur Morris, the Rake Who Wrote the Constitution.

So, again, Morris is the better answer if you have to name just one... but Madison played a large role, and the ONLY one in your list that would work.

Hope you haven't answered this yet because while Thomas Jefferson DID write the Declaration of Independence, he was actually in France as an Ambassador while the Constitution of the United States was written.

His good friend James Madison is called the father of the Constitution because he did so much preparation before the convention and brought a plan called "The Virginia Plan" which became the framework for the debate.

However, even James Madison did not actually WRITE the constitution. The man who actually wrote the words from the notes that had been taken from the 4 moths of debate was Gouvernor Morris.

If this is a test or question from your teacher then I am sure that teacher wants you to choose James Madison but if you want to actually know the right answer it would have to be Gouvernor Morris!
