From my 47 yrs. experience the old 10 and 2 grip is the best average position in case you need to make a quick turn to the right or left. Let's supposed for a moment you were driving in the right lane on a four lane road and were gripping the wheel with your right hand at the 1 o'clock position and your left hand at 8 or 9 o'clock and a dear runs toward your right fender and jumps in front of you. What's your first instinct besides slamming on the brakes. Your hand position has you momentarily tied up. The left hand is in the way and useless. The right hand can turn the wheel 90 - 105 degrees to the left at best, providing there's no one already driving in your blind spot.

The old 10 and 2 position gives you the most options for hand over hand maneuvers

ntsb found that this position on the wheel was not only comfortable but in a collision was safer for the driver and gave the driver more control while driving. however with the advent of the airbag this has now changed because of the way the bag deploys it is possible to incure injury .

I beleive it is because
A. if you slide, you have more hold on the wheel
B. If airbag blows off, it will just blow your hands to the side, instead of like people who steer with one hand on the bottom of wheel, if airbag goes off, it would break your wrist.
