It depends on what was removed. a Pap checks for cervical cancer so if she still has a cervix then of course she needs the paps. Although very rare, a pap will also look for vaginal cancer. They might only make her go every 2-3 years only if she has never had a + Hpv result. Sorry I oculdn't answer mre..."partial" could mean a lot of things and I do not know which parts are left to answer better.

I had a partial and was told that I needed 3 negatives in 3 years and then I could go to every 3 years for a pap.

I can't imagine the doctor told her no. Of course she still needs annual pap smears. Even if they took the cervix, you can still develop cancer in the remaining vaginal tissue. And she would still have ovaries, which would need to be checked. She would need to tell her gyn she's had a partial hysterectomy done prior to having the pap smear done, but I think she still would need the annual exam. I think your sister needs a second opinion and a new doctor, because this isn't the info we give out.

Partial hysterectomy leaves the cervix intact. Because cervix is the part that gets cancer, yes, she may have to have paps.

It depends on what type of hysterectomy she had. If she had her uterus and cervix removed (vaginal hysterectomy) for a noncancerous condition, you usually don't need Pap smears. However, if she had her uterus removed but her cervix remains intact (abdominal hysterectomy), she will still need regular Pap smears. In either case, regular pelvic exams and mammograms are recommended.
