I think you mean your house has forced hot water heat. It will still work if you turn the water off because it is a closed loop system. Turning off the water would be a good idea. If the heat fails for any reason or the power goes out for several days pipes could freeze. If the water is shut off the house will not be flooded if any pipes break.

Hi,
I wouldn't touch the water, I would just turn down the heat (Personally I would keep it around 50 degrees) especially if you are in a colder climate. If you have plants, fish or anything of that nature I definately would keep it around 50
any lower and you wll kill your plants , they are used to a normal temperature.
If you don't have plants to worry about or any type of pet in the house. You COULD drain your waterlines, and turn everything off completely.
This is what My Mother does when she spends the winters
down in florida. If there is no water in the pipes, there is no
reason to have heat on at all.
Seeing that you will be gone 3 weeks or more, you may want to consider this option.
Also don't forget to alert your postal carrier that you will be away so they can hold your mail.
and if you have a good neighbor, ask them to keep an eye on
your property while you're away.

the heating system should be a sealed system, therefor if you shut off the water to the house, the heating system should still function on it's own. by shutting off the water to your house, your avoiding possible damage to your house in case there's a leak while your gone, avoiding a possible flood. my boss left the water on and the water heater breached, the water went and flooded 3 bedrooms, down the stairs, the nanny apt. and out the garage door! a week later we're finishing replacing the sheet rock and carpet at a very large expense, we figure about $4500 total damage!

It will run. The boiler is self contained .But why do you want to shut the main off unless you bleed the pipes. At least open all your faucets for expansion. That includes the garden hose ones.
