the men at the alamo were beseiged for several days. a u.s. army was gathering a few counties away (san jacinto), and instead of pursue this army, santa anna stayed at the alamo, exhausting his men. when santa anna eventually went to san jacinto, his efforts were useless and the mexican american war was ended by the treaty of gaudeloupe hidalgo.

Vanessa's answer is a good one, and is correct. However, she left out some details. During the seige of the Alamo, Sam Houston was gathering an army to the North East. He wanted the Alamo defenders to drop back to his position, but they refused. After the Alamo fell, Santa Anna continued his march northward. To his dismay, Santa Anna ran into Sam Houston's army and got his *** kicked back down into Mexico. Santa Anna dressed up like a regular soldier, in order to avoid capture, but he was discovered when the Texans found out why regular soldiers in the Mexican army were saluting a private. Hope this helps.
