Just fyi... a fracture and a break are the same thing. what some people do not understand the difference of is a break (fracture) and a sprain. Sometimes a sprain can hurt as much as a break. In a fracture, the bones are actually broken in 2 or more pieces. With a sprain, the LIGAMENTS and TENDONS are stretched or torn. Without doing X rays, there is no way to determine what the injury is. I suggest going to the ER or to an Urgent Care Clinic (usually a WHOLE bunch cheaper) and being evaluated. If you choose not to do that, then ice to the affected region, elevate and Tylenol for pain. Be careful with walking as this can exacerbate the injury. You may need crutches.

It sounds like it's broken because he can't put any weight on it. The doctor is cheaper than the emergency room, which is what I'm guessing you guys are considering, so if he thinks he can handle the pain until the morning, then wait. As long as he stays off the ankle until he sees the doctor, he probably won't do any additional damage to it. If it were my husband, though, I'd make him go right now whether he wanted to or not.

Please go to a foot/ankle specialist like a podiatrist to have his ankle evaluated. If he can't put weight on it, he should get a x-ray to see if the bones in the ankle or foot are broken or not. In the meantime, ice it, keep it wrapped with an ace wrap, and elevate until he's able to see someone. Hope this helps!

ER, the longer you wait the worse the damage will get...also it will hurt him worse if they examine it tomorrow. Get your car keys.....GO NOW!!!!
