I am a freshman pre-med major and my gpa for my first semester is a 3.0 with no science courses. I was never that great in any courses other than science and this worries me that med schools might reject applicants because their gpa in other courses wasnt that high.

Honestly, admission to medical school is sufficiently competitive so that the schools put importance on everything. Yes, sciences matter, but if your other courses are weak, they may think you don't bother much unless something is really important to you.

First, you're only in your first year. It's expected that your first year grades will be low whether they are science or non-science courses. It's not related to academics though, since first year courses are insanely easy. It has to do with the fact that most people are not ready for university when they start. Most people starting university are just immature fresh out of high school children and are expected to screw up their responsibilities. Don't worry too much right now. Medical schools will be looking for a good GPA overall especially during the last couple of years and a couple of low grades during first year, even an F, is not going to make that much difference on your GPA in the long run.

yes - med schools look at the entire package. It's extremely competitive to get into medical school because if you think about it, there are thousands of colleges out there, but less than 100 medical schools..if you're GPA drops below a 3.7, your chances drop to slim to none.

If you do research during your pre-med it will help you greatly getting into med school. I wouldn't worry with a 3.0, just don't let it drop any more.

3.3 GPA is usually required at the least selective no name medical schools. 3.8 is needed for top schools like JHU, WustL, Duke, Harvard Medical schools.

Of course don't forget the MCAT.

So, you definitely need to fix your GPA
