My friend wrote me a check to cash to give that cash back to her so that she could get a money order for rent. A week later, I receieved a letter from my bank saying that there was a stop payment on the check. I told my friend about it and she denied it. My bank froze my account and took out the amount of the check that I had cashed for her. She keeps telling me that she had enough funds to cover the check and says that it's my bank's fault for all of this. I even went through her mail (which was already open)to find a letter from her bank confirming the stop payment for that particular check. I haven't told her about this but she does know that I got a letter from my bank about the stop payment.

Is she lying to me or would my bank be at fault for all of this???

If you haven't already received it, you can get a copy of the returned item from your bank that will confirm the reason that the check came back. Her bank will have stamped it "refer to maker, NSF, Stop Payment, etc." It will only be stamped "Stop Payment" if she authorized them to stop payment on the check! Have your bank give you a copy and show your friend!

YOUR bank is not going to lie about a stop payment on a check. Think about this. Why did 'your friend' need to cash a check through YOU to get cash to send a money order ? Why didn't she just go to her BANK and do it, or why didn't she send her personal check to cover the rents, if she had sufficient funds ?

This person isn't a friend. She's a lying scam artist, and you're the victim. With any kind of luck, you will eventually get your money back and will hopefully think about what you do BEFORE you do it.

Your friend is lying to you. If she wasn't lying, all she would have to do is go to her own bank, withdraw the money, and give it to you. For that matter, she could have done that in order to obtain the rent money in the first place. If she really wanted to pay the rent, why did she need to get cash for a money order? Why didn't she just write a check to pay the rent? If this friend is your roommate, you need to find a new roommate who can pay her share of the rent.

The bank doesn't normally put a stop check on checks, the person the check belongs to usually does that. So you'd want to call your bank and have them call HER bank to find out who actually put the stop check on it. Your bank can find that out.

talk to your lawyer the only way you can put a stop payment is if the person on the account (your friend) requested it. you need to get your money back she scammed you..why didnt she just take the check to her bank and get a money order there. banks do that.i know i used to work at one. she screwed you....get a lawyer sue her get your money back...you should give her a chance to give the money back to you and if she doesnt then press charges. but immediately get a lawyer..

The above answers are all correct, she knowingly screwed you.
Being a landlord I've heard them all.
I would tell her that you are going to the police and pressing charges because writing bad checks is a crime.
Give her 12 hours to come up with the money OR ELSE!

This person is not a friend. She had to have put a stop payment on your check. I hope you didn't put out too much because I don't see you getting it back. Friends are tried and true.... this one is not true.....

Your friend robbed you. Surely this girl has some sort of history that would make this not so much of a surprise.
