The war began in 1868. There was a truce, but it kept until 1900 when the yanks intervened in the war to try to seize Cuba.

Since the Cubans said NO, they had to grant Cuba her independence, with the Platte amendment, that gave them the authority to intervene in Cuba whenever they wanted to

I'm not too sure about the answer above....but yes, Cubans had been fighting a low level insurrection for years against the 300 year old Spanish rule..not really armies in the field, but hit and run raids, sniping at Spanish authorities........after the USS Maine blew up in Havana harbor, ( short form ) the US declared war on Spain, invaded Cuba, kicked the Spanish out and gave Cuba to the Cubans...with a heavy oversight from America, of course..it's only 90 miles away from Florida.........
