Not sure, but I do know why hummingbirds hum................

Well its probably because birds can fly, and the fly was probably named because someone was looking and though, man that thing can fly... ok all kidding aside there the "fly" as you call it is actually any number of Diptera species of insects most commonly noted by their single set wings, these include masquitos, gnats, midges, etc. The insect most commonly thought of as a fly is the common Housefly there is not actually an insect called a fly.

Silly, birds are larger then flys. Just like a horse can't horse. Flys are so little , they can sneak a lot of stuff through.
