It is an indoor plant already that I will be cutting. It will not be the roots; just the upper half of the stem and leaves. Can I place it in a jar of water? Will it grow? Thank you.

Lots of plants root in water. Remove any leaves that will be below water level to prevent rot. The container should be clear. Change the water if it gets cloudy. South windows are usually the best location for water starts. You should see roots in 7 to 10 days. I have water starts that are still growing happily after being in nothing but water for 2 years. When in doubt, plunk it in water.

Most likely it will grow in water. Another idea is to buy a little container of "Root Tone" or another brand as long as it is a root stimulator (Also known as a growth hormone for plants.) Works wonders. Not 100% of cuttings, but the majority will grow. You dip the cut end in the powder and plant in soil. Good luck.

that depends on the plant....some plants can root in water others cant...without knowing the kind its hard to say but heres a couple ways of doing it...
if its a plant with a thick stock (base) you can take a razor and cut out a apple wedge size hole out of the stock and place root hormone on cut (if you dont have the horemone powder its ok ...it just works faster) then take some wet pete moss a little soil and place it on some clear plastic wrap take this "band-aid" and tie it around the hole and seceure it ...the plant will grow roots into the moss and then you can cut it off.....it takes anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks..keep it moist by dribbling water down the stock and letting it drip into wrap...after about 3 weeks you can take a peak at the progress by gently undoing it but try not to desturb it cuz you could break off the baby roots if your not carefull......thats one kind of propagation of some plants...the best thing to do is get some of that root hormone powder and no mather what way you do it that stuff really helps and visit your local garden shop or home depo and go into the book section and cheat and look up the plant and how to propagate it ...and not buy the book...but you need to know what kind of plant in order to make babies!!!!

A lot of plants do root in water. Be very careful when you plant them into soil as the roots will be very delicate. It is much better to root in a sandy compost, or one with per lite added. Hormone rooting powder helps too. It is very rewarding to make extra plants this way. Good luck. P.S. It is better to take cuttings in the spring when plants are growing strongly.

Plants need light, air, water and dissolved minerals to grow. Your cutting has 3 of the 4, but eventually it will run out of the minerals it needs and stop growing. Lack of nitrogen will probably happen first. The lower leaves will turn yellow. It's using stored and recycled minerals now but will need calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium etc etc from somewhere before too much longer.

depends on the plant but it is always worth a try. Many times they will start roots. Once they get some good roots transplant them into the ground because they will need some nutrients from the earth. That is unless you want to get into hydroponics.

Maybe ? Some plants to better in sand. Some right in the dirt. For all make sure they kept moist. You can put in water but only a few days. If it is the vine type all will work.
