Because they wrongly associate it with homosexuality/lesbianism, or because they are only looking at the surgical end of things.
Saying that anything you have to pay for is a choice is like saying that if someone pays to have a tumor removed, that they chose to have cancer.

Most people just don't understand and often won't take the time to understand and become educated as to what a transsexual is. Nor do most take the time to empathize the hardships, the mental and emotional tortures going on inside of someone transsexual.
Society, the media, some religions try to 'pigeon hole' people into a box and tell us what we should be so we can be controlled. Anyone outside of the box, anyone different gets chastised and accused of making the choice to be different, as if being rebellious to some rule of being.
Most people don't realize it is a developmental birth defect that takes place in the mother's womb. Transsexuality is certainly not a choice. Who would want to 'choose' to be treated with so much predudice from both the straight and gay worlds and go through so much pain?
Bottom line, it's just ignorance and lack of getting educated about the matter.
Fortunately, those that really love you, will love you no matter what, even if they don't understand, and they're the ones that really count in the end. And you're not alone. Don't worry about the rest of the people, but definately be very careful on who you share your identity with.

When I was conceived, where was my choice in being born male? I must have missed that part of my parents sexual act that conceived me. I did not choose this TS life, it is part of me. It is a part the I feel I need to change myself so I can be comfortable with myself. Maybe these "sexual bigots" feel that we should just commit suicide and be gone from "their" perfect hetero world. They should learn that I am a hetero that was born with the wrong body parts and am trying to use mans technology to correct the body that I was born with.

Most of them seem to be under the impression that one "becomes" trans if/when one has surgery. Since they claim that being trans is a physical state achieved through medical intervention, they can claim that one voluntarily opts to "become" trans if one pursues medical treatment.
Imho, it's a close relation to the "you're only gay if you regularly have sex with members of the same gender" line of thinking. These people are assuming that heteronormativity is the absolute universal basis for human experience - that everyone is *really* "straight," that their *real* nature is in compliance with whatever sexual and gender norms are currently in vogue, and that any other apparent variations on the theme are just examples of people being intentionally difficult or perverse.
Basically, why do people assume this? Because they're stupid, clueless, self-absorbed twits.

Because they are very narrow minded and don't understand the complexities of the psychology behind transsexuality. they then fear what they don't understand, or try to justify why you and other transsexuals are they way they are. Just ignore them, and tell them you feel bad for their narrow-mindedness. Be strong, and true to who you are, there are people out there that know the truth, and you know the truth!. Take care of yourself, and keep your chin high, be proud!

You chose to have the operation. And I'm sure you yourself thought you had a choice to have it or not, especially if you consulted any type of therapist for advice in dealing with your feelings in some manner other than surgery.
The feelings may not have been avoidable. The way you chose to deal with them may have been.
People that see or equate this condition with a form of homosexuality, and its accompanying urges, are wrong when they equate these urges to feelings of being in the wrong physical body. The actions taken to rectify these different sets of desires are not in any way equally consequential.

Because they don't understand. They think people who are gay choose too. Do we choose our sex when we are born? No. Nor can you choose whether your physical sex characteristics match what goes on in your brain.
