I assume that by "a regular shaped TV" you're referring to a 4x3 aspect ratio.... that's sooooo 1990's! Yes, they do still make (and sell) 4x3 ratio televisions, but I'd guess that in maybe 10 years those will be obselete. All programming (movies, tv shows, news, etc.) seems to be heading in the direction of 16x9 (widescreen).
The advantage of this is that it gives you more viewing space - but if you view a widescreen presentation (movie, tv show) on a 4x3 (full screen) television, the movie has to be shrunk down to fit all of it into the frame, hence the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. What a "full frame" (also known as "pan and scan") movie does is that it cuts off part of the frame so that your presentation will take up the entire screen.
If it's not clear from the above paragraphs, my preference is surely widescreen.
For some graphical representation of what data you are missing by watching the "full screen" edition of a movie, please see the site that I've cited as my source.

Well, let me say this. If you see a movie in widescreen, you see the movie the way it is meant to be seen, the same ratio aspect. If you buy a movie in full screen ratios, the movie will not show any black spaces BUT the people on the screen will look stretched and wierd. I think a movie should be viewed in widescreen, if you just sit and watch the movie, after about 10 minutes you will not notice the black spaces. Good Luck!

Expanding on what Ms. Bass said, the widescreen edition cuts out a great portion of the action on screen. For example, in "Sound of Music", full screen completely cuts off half of the choreography of the central number. In "Gladiator", half of the most impressive choreographed action during the opening scene is absolutely eliminated.
With that said, "full-screen" doesn't necessarily give you the "full experience".
Wide screen, all the way.

My choice is Widescreen. It is the way the film was intended to be viewed by the director. I love movies and I want to be able to see exactly what I was intended to see. I hate watching a Fullscreen movie and have a part of someone's face cut off because of the ratio.

i like the wide screen. that's the way the films were made and it enables you to see the entire picture. if you're watching the film, you don't even notice the black. when watching fullscreen dvd's, you're actually missing part of the picture. they have to cut the sides of the picture out so that it will fit the screen.

It is all because we naturally view the world in a wide screen fashion. The more you use it the more natural it will feel. I dont believe we will see the format ever change back.
