And you are certain a word is misspelled but too lazy to get the real dictionary off the book shelf, (like I am) so you deliberately insert one different letter and whatdoyaknow the correct spelling suddenly appears?

What a crock. If you use "there" instead of "their" or "they're", or make similar mistakes, then spell checker is going to say 'no misspellings found' when they still exist.
