For background information, you'll look for things about ionic compounds and how they 'react' with water, and the science that your project dealt with is the science of solutions, and the effects of solutes on the properties of a solution.

It sounds to me like question 1 is asking you to give your sources. They want you to tell where you get your information and how you plan on attaining it. For instance, will you be looking in scientific journals, the public library? If so, what books?
The second question is referring to what kind of science you are asking about with your topic. Is it chemistry, biology. A good place to start here would be to explain that it deals with a good amount of chemistry because you are questioning that soluble properties of salt and the temperature resistances, specific heats, etc. of water/ice.
