Well, if you are talking about a empire under a single authority you would have to say the Mongol Empire. Now on the site Wikopedia until a month ago it had that the largest type of power was the old Communist bloc of Russia, Eastern Europe, China, South East Asia, Korea and Cuba. However, these althoug under one ideology were under different authorities. Next came the Mongol Empire on 25,000,000 square kilometres. Next came the British Empire. However recently they have put the British Empire at the head. But, the British didn't have all their empire at once. By the time they had gotten say Egypt and Palastine for instance, most of their settled colonies such as Australia were independent. Also I find it very very strange that they should alter such. Therefore it can be safetly said that the largest empire under one authority and certainly the largest land empire in history was the Mongol Empire from 1268-1318 when it emcompassed most of the land between the Pacific Ocean, the Artic Circle, Northern India, the Meditteranean, the Aegean Sea and the Carpathian Mountains.

You look at all the heartland of Asia and how big it is. Now I now Canada and Australia are big. However when you take the parts of the British Empire they would fit in to that. However if look at history there are the big three. The Communist bloc of old which was under multiple authorities, the British Empire which was under multiple levels of government and the Mongol Empire under one supreme and absolute authority and level of government. One did it by adding multiple authorities, one did it by multiple types of governments and definitions over ages-and one did it for real. And the one that did it for real dwafed the other two in power, magnificance, advancement and good government. The other two - great powers, the third a giant. Hope this helps.

Largest ... the British Empire.

At one time the United Kingdom controlled; Canada, the United States, a third of Africa, India, a major portion of Polynesia, Australia, as well as ... significant possessions in the Carribean, the American North-west, Micronesia, and Southern Asia.

It was not only the largest Empire (at its apex) demographically, but geographically as well -- the tiny island of England controlled close to a third of the globe for almost 100 years.

Blursd2 is absolutely correct. In 1921 at the apex of the British Empire, they controlled 1/3 of the land (Canada and Australia) and 1/4 of the population (India).
