Here Wally since you asked, this is the Wikipedia explanation of the term:
'French fries': The straightforward explanation of the term is that it means potatoes fried in the French sense of the verb: "to fry" can mean either sautéing or deep-fat frying, while its French origin, frire, unambiguously means deep-frying.

See it has nothing to do with any people, except those who fix the French fries. Stop by a fast food restaurant and they will be glad to ask "do you want fries with that?" and you can see French Fries for yourself. LOL

Wally you have been so busy tonight - so many questions!
All good ones too! A French Fry is exactly that i.e. Pomme Fries - this is French for a fried potato (wedge) - Chips to those of you in Britain. My French is strictly high school so please forgive my spelling! But I do try.

Not a bad idea. A french fry is that thing you put gravy on in Canada. I'll take mine, home made and straight. Salt and lots of pepper only, no ketchup

In Quebec they are called patates -frites and they have poutine also which is fries covered with cheese curds and hot gravy. It took me a long time to try that concoction but guess what? It's really good. I'm of British and French Canadian heritage and I like my fish and chips with malt vinegar thankyou.

I live where JR Simplot lives, inventor of the frozen french fried potato and supplier of McDonalds all over the world--Must remember to ask him what it is, since his company is family owned and he is a billionaire, I'll bet he wouldn't even tell me what one is.
